After Extraction is a material research project investigating the analysis and remediation of toxic waste embedded into landscapes by extractive industries. Situated within a post-industrial mining landscape in Cornwall UK, the project focuses on deposited heavy metals that continue to pollute the environment today - long after mining and processing activities ceased in the area during 1980s. Through solidification and stabilisation research using adjacent industrial by-products, such as Slag, a geopolymer material is formed capable of immobilising contaminates. The resulting sculpture shows that toxic waste can be chemically contained and re-engineered. By utilising these industrial waste streams for remediation and emerging material systems, After Extraction proposes circular innovation for Industrial residues.
