Annual Matter

Andreas Lejon

Konstfack - University Of Arts Crafts and Design

Annual Matter explores the pinecone as a starting point for rethinking furniture and forest resources. Produced annually by the tree, the pinecone represents a renewable material flow that can be collected without cutting the tree down. Through grinding, pressing, heating and casting, the project investigates its fibres and natural chemistry as a material for design. These experiments informed a series of speculative prototypes, translating the material research into functional objects and illustrating how the material could be applied. Rather than proposing pinecones as a replacement for timber, Annual Matter asks how design might change if we broadened our understanding of what constitutes a valuable forest resource.
